Master: Do you want to talk to me?
Student: Yes, I do. I'm not sure how to go about it though.
Master: Say what's on your mind.
Student: I have read some things about Zen. It sounds wonderful at times. Other times, it feels like it is mere word play. As I say these things, I already can anticipate what a Zen master might be saying in response.
Master: What do you anticipate that I'd say?
Student: That the phrase "mere" word play suggests that I look down on words and play. That there is nothing to learn from a Master etc. While I understand all that, my understanding may be incorrect or incomplete. As I say that, I also think that there is nothing 'incorrect' and that 'incomplete' may be more of a self-fulfilling (or self-unfulfilling to be accurate) state of mind. Basically I want to know if I'm missing something or if my understanding is correct.
Master: And you think I can provide you with that clarity?
Student: I think you can help me achieve this clarity.
Master: I'm not sure I have anything to offer you, but I don't mind continuing the dialogue.
